The 5th of May is an official flag day. Denmark is celebrating the liberation from the German occupation (1940 – 1945). The message of freedom was send in the radio at the evening 4th of may, and this day has ever since been celebrated in many ways, one of them is to place candles in the windows. During the war, it was forbidden to use light in the evening without having black curtains drawn. The evening at 4th of May, most likely every window was lit by candles.
