Sankt Hans aften – St John´s eve 2013

The evening of june 23 is called Sankt Hans evening.  A festive time where people meet to enjoy a big bonfire and to sing together, while celebrating the longest day at the year. In Copenhagen sunrise is 4:28 am and sunset 10:55 pm this day. From now on, every day will be a bit shorter until December. No one likes to think of that, so tonight will be a giant cosy gettogether, in parks, at lakes, in private gardens and public Spaces, – everywhere.  There is a traditional song called  “Vi elsker vort land” (We love our country) you can see the text here. Usually there will be a speech before the fire are being lit, often mentioning freedom and responsability. Did I forget to mention the witch? She is on top of the bonfire, ready to fly back to “Bloksbjerg”.

Wikipedia: “The evening of June 23, St John’s Eve, is the eve of celebration before the Feast Day of st, John the babtist.”

I wish we had such traditions – of summer solstice celebrations etc. – here. I love it! This looks like such fun!
