30 years and not married? Prepare for the obligatory pepper mill.

An unmarried man is called a “Pebersvend” (Pepper-journeyman or fellow) an unmarried woman a “Pebermø. (Pepper-virgin). The origin of this tradition comes from old days, when pepper (and other spices) was sold by traveling salesmen, who wasn´t allowed to get married.

An unmarried celebrating his/her 30 th birthday will most likely find at least one pepper mill among the presents.
